We meet Scott Mills...Radio 1 DJ
posted Sat, 20 Mar 2010 13:16:24 by Matt HunterMH: How are you feeling about tonight's gig?
SM: Pretty good, I've noticed you've got a new building, which I didn't realise. I thought I'd be in The Font, but apparently that's been demolished, which is a bit upsetting.
MH: Did you like The Font?
SM: I just got used to it, I think. Now it's not there anymore and someone's just broken the news to me, so give me a bit of time.
MH: What made you interested in becoming a DJ?
SM: It's all I can remember wanting to do really, like some people go through this thing of, I want to be a policeman, I want to be a fireman. I always wanted to be a DJ, since I can remember.
MH: You had Matt Damon on your show last week, what does he think of the Matt Damon game?
SM: He thinks it's really stupid. We threw toys at his head, and you wouldn’t get away with that with most Hollywood stars. He is one of the nicest people I've ever interviewed. You know when you can just get the measure of somebody, that they’re just up for a laugh. So I thought let's try it with him, and we threw toys at him. Now it's all over the internet.
MH: If Matt Damon is someone that is easy to interview, who’s been difficult, who’s been tricky?
SM: Oh god loads, people you think are going to be quite fun sometimes turn out to be having an off day. Some times people you’ve interviewed before that were fun last time, aren’t fun this time. The first time Verne Troyer, (Minnie Me in the Austin Powers films) came in he was hilarious, and then the next time he came in he just gave yes or no answers. There’s lots of interviews that have been uncomfortable, because there are people that don’t want to give anything away. My least favourite interview of recent time is Flo Ryder, because he said absolutely nothing and was quite rude.
MH: Are you still obsessed with The Hoff (Michael Hasselhoff)?
SM: Well, I’ve got a strange friendship with him which is bizarre, where he’ll sometimes call me up for a chat. On paper me and him shouldn’t be friends at all, but because we’ve done so many stupid TV shows and radio shows together its kind of developed as this mad thing. I wouldn’t say I'm obsessed, but he’s still in my life.
MH: Which broadcasters do you have the most respect for?
SM: I respect Chris Evans as a broadcaster, I think he’s really good. Jonathan Ross is one of the few people who are good at radio and television. I think you’re either better at one or the other, and I think Jonathan Ross is amazing at both.
MH: What do you think will be the effect of axing the BBC radio station 6Music?
SM: Well I don’t even know if its going to happen yet, and there seems to be a big campaign to save it. I think a lot of people will be upset about it, I know that. But as the Director General said on TV the other day, you just have to look at where your audience is and if it's not got a big enough audience, then it poses a question. That is why the BBC Trust is there. Currently the BBC is going through some changes.
MH: Do you think it will affect new bands trying to come through?
SM: Not really no, because I think Radio 1 does that very well in all areas, but I think there is an audience for it; but then you have to ask the question: is the audience big enough? It’s a really tough one.
MH: Thanks Scott for speaking to us
SM: Cheers, thank you.
